Jesika, the Portuguese girl in the UK

Hello! I’m Jesika, a 21-year-old international student at Bournemouth University. I come from a small beautiful island called Madeira Island, Portugal. In 2016, my family and I made the decision to move to the UK so that I could start university here. As you can imagine moving to a different country can be really stressful but don’t worry! In this blog post, I will share my experience with you!

One of the first things I worried about was the IELTS exam. If you’re an international student and English is not your first language, you will need to prove that you have a good level of English. The International English Language Testing System will assess your English skills through four parts: Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking. I always heard that passing the IELTS exam was very difficult but luckily, I managed to pass on my first try. I believe that my passion and talent for languages as well as the help of my English teachers at school were crucial for me to pass. In case you don’t feel as supported as I felt, Student Works offers part-time and full-time lessons in the morning, afternoon and evening! We also work with the best English schools! I can guarantee you that with the help of Student Works you will excel in the exam!

After dealing with the IELTS, I started the process to apply to Bournemouth University. I won’t lie, it was really confusing in the beginning because I didn’t have any guidance nor acquaintances that had studied before in the UK. Somehow with the help of my mum, we managed to apply through UCAS – an online website dedicated to operating the application process for British universities. However, my piece of advice for anyone wishing to study in the UK is to research all the universities that you are interested in and find someone or an agency that can help you. As an example, Student Works represents lots of universities which means that there are many options for you to choose from. The most important part is that we will provide you with full support with your application such as documentation needed for the application. At least you won’t feel as lost as I did…

Although I have said previously that moving to the UK was not easy, I have to admit that one of the best aspects of moving with my family was that I didn’t have to worry about accommodation because my parents did that for me. Nonetheless, I have international friends who are studying or working here and had to think about where to stay. It is true that there are many letting agencies and private landlords that you can reach out. However, you need to be really careful. Not everyone is trustworthy. Here at Student Works, whether you want to come to the UK for work or to study, we can also help you find accommodation at affordable prices and in good locations. That’s less of a worry for you!

Currently, as a Communication and Media undergraduate student, I had to think about finding a four-week placement. Studying at Bournemouth University has been a great experience. I had the opportunity not only to make new friends but also to learn more about the role of media in society. However, it is through a placement that you can put all the theory you have learnt into practice. Student Works gave me the chance to do an internship with them and I have developed so many practical skills that are essential for the industry I want to work in. Through this placement, I get to edit photos and videos for social media. I use social media every day to increase activity in order to reach existing and new customers. I deal with phone calls, emails and clients coming to the office. I also promote adverts online. I’m glad this placement allows me to do different things because I can enhance my CV and feel much more confident for the future!
